Aikido, 合気道 when it is well understood, is
in effect, the closest fit to water-flowing LHBF; it lacks organized sets, and adapts to the situation no matter how complex
it becomes; in this regard, its principle-basics are similar to Yi-chuan. Having studied under qualified teachers, I am comfortable
to make this statement.
I will say also, that some teachers
make the claim that aikido is derived from Chinese Ba-gua-palming 八卦掌 ; that is absolutely
false. Modern 'ba-gua-' owes much of its' existence to prior 'circling' exercises..of which there are many..and also to
the applications of Lo Han Shaolin...which was the first style learned by the self-acclaimed bagua-boxing 'originator Dong
Hai-chuan. 董海川
Circling practices can also be found to be a part of advanced Wudang 'tai-chi-boxing'..a
fact noted and recorded by one of Dong's top students Msr. Yin Fu 尹福 (1842-1911). in
his document of the Si Xiang Boxing, 一原 四象拳 one source four images. Yi-chuan founder Wang
Xiang-zhai himself stated that most of ba-gua was useless and that only the single/ double-change should be retained.
