LIU HE BA FA, Five Character Secrets, by Lee DengFeng (ed.Paul Dillon), 152 pages, Softbound, PlumFlower Publications. Comments at: http://www.fangrending.com/'Sung Dynasty Taoist Chen Tu-an of Mt.Hua had no successors; his life ended
in isolation. Later Lee DengFeng, a scholar and martial artist, searched out writings and developed 'LHBF' poetry as it has
come down to us.' 'This book, newly re-published, is a compendium of Lee's writings; comprised of five word
poems or aphorisms. These are translated word-by-word and contextually then with commentary by Paul Dillon who has studied
the chinese language. The sayings are philosophical-martial with much emphasis on paradox.
'This manuscript represents the LHBF system; composed of 134 five-word poems
it constitutes 670 words of source material with phrases such as "Collect your pearls and jades, but keep them all concealed".
Many sections are like the Tai Chi Classics; LHBF precedes the development of Tai Chi. Dillons commentary is helpful and he
rarely tries to interpose opinions. Most of the saying, as in the case of the Tai Chi Classics, could be applied to any Chinese
martial art. For LHBF this is an essential text. For the collector of martial historical documents this is rewarding.'
Robert Xavier, a student of John Chung-Li, in association with Mark McGee, have released their
translation/ interpretation of the Five-Word teachings available via booksamillion.com
In 1978 Stanley Rosenberg and Troels Dalgaard, the previous managers of
the HwaYo Institute in Danmark published a book in danish called Hwa Yu Tai Chi; there are few copies available.
More than telling the story of LHBF, it tells how tai chi was being perceived by the first generation tai chi community in
Scandinavia. The Group is currently directed by Erik Matthiesen.
